Recently I had the pleasure of being invited to attend the “Raise the Macallan” scotch tasting event at the classically beautiful Terminal City Club in Downtown Vancouver. Macallan distillery was showcasing its new line of single malt scotches deemed the “1824 Series”.

The evening started with a welcoming cocktail concocted specifically for the night. Cleverly called the Spicy Ginger Mac, it consists of an ounce and a half of Macallan Gold, one wedge fresh lime, and four ounces of Fentimans botanically made ginger beer. The drink made a smooth introduction to what was quickly proving to be a classic event.

We were then seated for the hour-long tasting guided by Macallan Brand Ambassador, Dan Volway. The 1824 Series collection includes four distinct malts all from the Speyside area of Scotland where they are matured in Spanish or American 100% sherry oak barrels.

Bottle displays
We tasted the Gold, Amber, Sienna, and Ruby in order from lightest to darkest. This staging allowed us to better discover the different flavours and aromas each has to offer.

Dan Volway was extraordinarily passionate about the Sienna. Personally I was particularly blown away by the Ruby, which is aged in Oloroso sherry casks and unleashes rich flavours of nutmeg, ginger, raisin, and dried fruits.
